Even with such an important game coming up on Sunday night, some Kansas City Chiefs can’t help but look ahead to the future. The Chiefs are playing the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII from Las Vegas in two days’ time, with a third Super Bowl championship in five years on the line, but one of the team’s biggest stars has made it clear that there’s more for him to achieve in football beyond lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy again.

Travis Kelce has played in three games on foreign soil as part of the NFL‘s ever-expanding International Series. And with news this week that the league will hold a 2025 regular-season game in Spain, Kelce wants in to continue his world travels.

Kelce: Playing in Madrid would be epic

Kelce has told reporters that he is excited about a regular-season game coming to Madrid in two seasons’ time. He badly wants to play in it, too. Kelce — at least half-seriously — told the media he would make a personal appeal to Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, pushing for Kansas City to participate in that game.

“It would be epic, it’d be legendary, it’d be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Kelce said.

Kelce has had many chances to explore outside the United States in recent years. The Chiefs have been a frequent choice for international games as one of the NFL’s most popular teams, and Kelce has accompanied girlfriend Taylor Swift before on the pop superstar’s globe-spanning “Eras Tour.”

“Any chance that we can get as football players to get out of the States and play international, I think you’d be silly not to jump at that opportunity,” Kelce said.

The Bernabeu’s successful bid

The NFL’s maiden matchup on Spanish soil will take place at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, the longtime home of LaLiga giants Real Madrid. The Bernabeu has been extensively renovated over the past couple years, with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez keen to make the stadium a hub for entertainment of all kinds.

Speculation is starting to intensify as to which teams will play in that regular-season game in Spain’s capital. The Chicago Bears and/or the Miami Dolphins could be logical candidates, as both teams have offices in Spain — Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was recently linked with a bid to purchase a majority stake in Real Madrid’s fierce local rivals Atletico Madrid.
