Many holidaymakers are being stopped from getting on their flights because of a passport rule. If your passport is old, you might not be able to go on your trip even if it still has nine months left.

The Home Office says lots of people have passports that could be over 10 years old when you add up the extra time from old ones.

After the UK left the EU, countries like Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and Greece won’t let you in if your passport was issued more than 10 years ago, even if it’s still okay in the UK, the BBC says.

Nathan Barnes, who is 31, couldn’t get on his flight to France even though his passport was okay. He did everything right, checked in online, and got past security but then they wouldn’t let him on the plane at the last minute, reports Wales Online.

Nathan shared: “They were very matter of fact about it, they just said ‘sorry you can’t board, off you pop’. I was gutted, surprised really. We had checked in online and thought it was fine.”

This rule is for all EU countries except Ireland. Your passport needs to be less than 10 years old and must last for more than three months after you come back.

Rory Boland, who knows a lot about travel, said: “The ’10-year-rule’ is a problem that continues to catch people out. What’s really important is that you check your passport validity and expiry date when booking your holiday.

“Not when you go to check-in, and certainly not when you travel to the airport, because that’s when people are continually finding that their passport is out of date and it’s often then too expensive, and too complicated to save their holiday.”

Simon Calder, the Independent’s Travel reporter stated that “a couple of hundred people a day” have been denied their journey due to this rule. He went on to say that this potentially affects around 100,000 individuals annually.
